Kent League Handicap Triples - Hartley - 17/10/10
Two teams from the club took part in this competition, Share and Coulter 1, Alan, Russ and Rob, and there was an unexpected entry from Share and Coulter 2, Pat, Bob and Peter. They were supposed to be at an event in Dunquerque but were disappointed to learn that the event was cancelled as the venue had burned down!
The morning session went well for both teams who qualified as league winners for the main competition and Team1 had the distinction of beating Corinne, Tracey and Kevin from Meadow 1. Our teams were drawn in different leagues in the second league phase and so did not get to play each other. Team 2 lost their first two games of the afternoon and so their interest in the event ended, but Team 1 did a bit better, beating Hartley Crofters (Div 2) to nil before losing 7-13 to Lordswood Dragons and then beating Lordswood Ospreys 13-3 and so qualify for the final.
The final was against Hartley Shaw; Joyce and Mick Nash and Jean-Louis Guiot and the 6-0 start we got from the handicapper proved to be not quite enough! We did have a difficult long shot for game at 11-11 and Alan was really unlucky and only just missed, and two ends later it was all over and we'd lost 11-13.
Not at all a bad result in the end, and the good news is that club funds will be a healthy £75 better off as a result which will help with our entry fees to the Kent League and the EPA for next season.
There's a nice write-up on the Kent League website which suggests that we lost the final to a combination of better tactics, home advantage and outrageous good luck, and we won't argue with that. The report also credits us with being the current Division 7 champions, but we'll overlook this little inaccuracy!
